Instrument Rating

Earning your Instrument Rating is one of the most significant milestones in your aviation journey. It allows you to fly safely in low-visibility conditions and clouds, relying solely on your aircraft instruments rather than outside visual cues.

Experience Requirements

  • Logged at least 50 hours of cross-country flight time as Pilot in Command (PIC).
  • A minimum of 40 hours of actual or simulated instrument time.
  • 15 hours of instrument flight training with an authorized instructor.
  • A long instrument cross-country flight (at least 250 nautical miles).
  • Pass the FAA written knowledge exam and a final practical flight test (Checkride).

Important Note: The requirements listed above are the absolute FAA minimums to qualify for the rating. In practice, most students require additional flight time and experience beyond these minimums to reach the proficiency and confidence required for safe instrument operations. We focus on mastery, not just meeting the baseline.
